The Immortality of Essence
When we gaze into the vast expanse of history, Time stands as an absolute, impartial witness, untouched by prejudice. In the relentless flow of Time, there is neither special affection nor malice toward anyone; its momentum is bold, and its judgment is immutable. In their earthly journey, humans often strive to preserve the experiences, art, and wisdom of their era through material forms. They engrave messages upon stones, erect high ramparts, and build monumental systems, attempting to secure the intellect of the present for the future. Yet, the fundamental law of Thermodynamics dictates that every physical form and structure in the universe is bound toward an inevitable transformation and alteration of state. The rule of Time is remarkably simple and transparent—whatever manifests within a finite form must eventually alter and dissolve back into its primordial elements. This cosmic order balances creation and transformation; when Time alters forms, it merely carves out space for new creation.
Amidst this physical transformation, there is but one element in the universe that suffers no decay, and that is 'Information' or 'Sattva' (The Essence). At the biological level, though the physical body of an organism perishes, its life experiences and biological data flow continuously into subsequent generations through the 'repository of essence' within the hereditary strands of DNA. Similarly, at the cosmic level, human names and physical identities fade away, yet the essence of their consciousness endures. When we look at ancient relics unearthed from the womb of the earth, we find their material grandeur silenced, but the human intellect embedded within them remains vibrant. Those ruins buried in the soil are beautiful testaments that while Time may not be responsible for keeping physical forms unaltered, it faithfully safeguards the 'Sattva' that aids the evolution of cosmic consciousness. When the excavation of a historic civilization takes place, Time does not merely expose its material ruins, but highlights the science, the lifestyle, the urban planning, and the collective intelligence of that era.
Upon the bosom of Time, a sacred current of truth-seekers and selfless observers has flowed silently and continuously since time immemorial. When a consciousness rises above personal boundaries solely to record the overarching truths of existence, its own identity becomes entirely secondary. History is replete with such sages who undertook treacherous journeys across thousands of miles and risked their lives, yet presented themselves in their chronicles merely as a medium. Their writings, rather than becoming personal sagas, emerge as authentic documentation of the society, the knowledge traditions, and the human values of that epoch. Even if they record their personal experiences or the hardships of the path, it is done solely to alert future travelers and to fulfill a compassionate social responsibility. They do not position themselves as heroes on the stage of history; instead, they serve as conduits for that light which remains eternally valid upon the anvil of Time.
It is from this vantage point that a deeper layer of Time becomes apparent. History remains merely a limited ledger of external events and physical forms, whereas Purana records the true essence, the inner consciousness, and the timeless truth of that era. History counts the structures and archives chronological dates, but Purana immortalizes the essence distilled from the experiences of that era within the cosmic memory. In truth, these timeless verities capture the eternal vibration of Time, which echoes through the ages.
Every era and every moment in time possesses its own vision and understanding. It is for this reason that human thoughts are often said to change with time. However, if we examine this more deeply from a scientific perspective, this transformation of thoughts is no accidental displacement, but rather their gradual 'refinement'. What is often perceived merely as change is, in truth, an inevitable milestone in the evolution of consciousness. This process is not about thoughts wandering away, but about them becoming more intensely centered. Refinement means moving toward a purer, more organized, and central truth with the gathering density of experience and realization. This process is identical to the tempering of raw gold in fire. The fire does not alter the fundamental nature of gold; it merely removes the impurities, allowing its true and purest pristine form to shine forth. When human consciousness is tempered in the crucible of life experiences, the layers of prejudice and ignorance fall away of their own accord. This refinement of thought liberates man from personal constraints and connects him with Universal Consciousness. Modern science, through Epigenetics, teaches us that beyond the foundational structure of our genes lies an environmental and cognitive ecosystem that determines which biological instructions are activated and which remain dormant. The seekers who selflessly record the truth of their times are, in reality, preparing an ideal environment for the mental and spiritual evolution of future generations. Their altruistic expressions become the biological and intellectual fuel that awakens the consciousness of the humans yet to come.
When this refinement attains its 'zenith', the perceived distances between science and spirituality vanish. As long as science merely measures material substances and their physical dimensions, it appears as nothing more than an external calculation. But the moment it embraces the realization that an infinite information network and an immanent consciousness are operating behind this entire cosmic arrangement, science itself becomes a profound experience.
When Jagadish Chandra Bose demonstrated in his laboratory, through his highly sensitive instruments, that metals and plants respond to external stimuli in the exact same manner as a living human being, he infused a vibrant consciousness into the dry data of botany. He showed that when a plant is poisoned, its cellular spasms mirror the agony of any sentient being. This scientific discovery was, in fact, a modern refinement of that ancient Upanishadic truth which speaks of a singular consciousness vibrating through the entire animate and inanimate world.
When Albert Einstein elucidated the interconnectedness of mass and energy (E=mc²) in the physical world, it was not merely a mathematical formula. It was the scientific validation of the transience of the visible world and the immortality of the energy hidden behind it. When Einstein observed this boundless and meticulously ordered Cosmic Intelligence, his mind was filled with profound awe and reverence. He himself confessed that the sense of mystery toward this grand arrangement was the source of his spirituality.
When the pioneers of quantum physicsErwin Schrödinger and Werner Heisenberg—peered into the subatomic particles through the lens of modern science, they discovered that nothing within is solid or deterministic. Everything is an infinite dance of probabilities and waves. Schrödinger was explicitly and deeply influenced by the philosophy of Indian Vedanta. He realized that within the atom, the 'Observer' and the 'Observed' cannot be separated; they are two ends of the self-same Universal Consciousness.
The ultimate justice of Time is that it gently dissolves ego-centric endeavors and immortalizes cosmic-centric creations. The expressions and thoughts that break free from the limitations of their era to flow for the collective welfare of the cosmos are inscribed by Time upon its bosom forever. When man dissolves his ego and begins to flow effortlessly with the current of truth, the deeds he performs become his true autobiography. Such creations become immortal on their own, transcending the flow of time; the coming eras are compelled by their own necessity to seek out the essence hidden within them and adopt it. This is the very impartial and bold pen of Time that has been safeguarding the truth for centuries.
